Safety first. Then comes trust.

The key rests in teaching, training, coaching, and encouraging safety rather than worrying about trust. As you might have figured out, trust results as the outcome of making the workplace, the interactions with teammates, and every single aspect of the daily routine safe to express fully, create, contribute, and “play” at work. Lack of safety, or distrust, kills all of those benefits.

With safety firmly in place, the rest of the Google traits then fall into place well. Without trust, none of the other traits make much difference at all.

Eustress and safety create a very powerful culture—for any team, family, or entire organization. The combination also explains why only the most effective teams at Google succeed.
